When you know exactly what you should be doing around food and you still cannot seem to do it.

If you have tried diets, tracked calories, committed to plans and found yourself back in the same place, the problem is not effort or knowledge. Most people who struggle with emotional eating are not lacking information about food. They are caught in a pattern that runs below the level where information and good intentions operate. Strategic Psychotherapy focuses on identifying and changing that pattern rather than adding another layer of rules on top of it.

What Emotional Eating and Weight Concerns Can Look Like

Emotional eating rarely feels like a choice in the moment. It tends to happen automatically in response to stress, fatigue, boredom or emotional discomfort, often before there is any conscious awareness of being hungry. Many people describe feeling out of control around certain foods, particularly in the evenings or under pressure, and then experiencing guilt or frustration afterwards that feeds directly into the next cycle.

The restrict and rebound pattern is one of the most common presentations. A period of controlled eating is followed by a loss of control, which is followed by shame, which is followed by another attempt to restrict. The cycle is exhausting. It is caused by the way the mind and body respond to restriction, stress and disconnection from natural hunger and fullness signals. Strategic Psychotherapy focuses on identifying what is maintaining that cycle and changing it directly.

Why Diets Usually Do Not Solve It

Joanne Graham spent over fifteen years in her own restrict and rebound cycle before training in Clinical Hypnotherapy and Strategic Psychotherapy. She became a Personal Trainer to better understand the physical side of health, and found that knowledge alone did not reach what was actually driving the pattern. What shifted was understanding the subconscious responses around food, stress and self-regulation, and working to change them at that level.

That experience informs how this work is approached. The goal is not another set of rules to follow. It is to change what is driving the behaviour so that a steadier relationship with food becomes possible without constant effort or vigilance.

How Strategic Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy Support Emotional Eating and Weight Loss

The approach used at Macarthur Complete Health is not focused on restriction or meal plans. It is focused on understanding what is maintaining emotional eating, cravings and the restrict-rebound cycle and working to change those responses directly.

Strategic Psychotherapy provides the clinical framework. Sessions are structured and goal-directed, focused on identifying the stress responses, automatic habits and thinking patterns that are driving eating behaviour. Hypnotherapy supports the deeper, experiential side of that work, helping new responses around food become more automatic over time.

This work also connects to SensEat, an app developed by Joanne as a between-session support tool for clients working on emotional eating and weight concerns.

Many people find that as those underlying patterns shift, cravings reduce, hunger and fullness signals become clearer and the guilt and all-or-nothing thinking that maintains the cycle begins to loosen.

What Happens in a Session

Sessions are personalised and structured around what you are experiencing.

Structured Conversation

The session begins with a focused conversation about what drives your eating behaviour, what triggers are involved and what you want to be different. Strategic Psychotherapy keeps this process specific and practical rather than open-ended.

Focused Therapeutic Work

Hypnotherapy is then used to support working with the automatic responses that drive emotional eating, cravings and disconnection from hunger and fullness signals. This is a structured, collaborative process. You remain aware and in control throughout.

Between Sessions

Each session is supported by a recording of the hypnosis work done in that session, which you listen to at home every night until your next appointment. This is an expected part of the process, not an optional extra. Repeated listening is where much of the integration happens, reinforcing the pattern change work and helping new responses become more established before the next session. Clients working on emotional eating and weight concerns are also encouraged to use the SensEat app, developed by Joanne as an additional between-session support tool.

Common Questions

Can hypnotherapy help with emotional eating and weight loss?

Yes. Hypnotherapy is well suited to this area because emotional eating is driven by automatic responses that operate below conscious awareness. Rather than helping you manage cravings after they have already started, hypnotherapy works alongside Strategic Psychotherapy to change how those responses are triggered in the first place. Sessions are structured and collaborative, and you remain aware and in control throughout.

Will I stop enjoying food after hypnotherapy?

No. The aim of this work is not to remove pleasure from eating but to change the automatic, driven quality of emotional eating so that food becomes a more neutral and considered experience. Most people find that as the compulsive quality reduces, they actually enjoy food more rather than less, because eating becomes a choice rather than something that happens to them.

Do I have to follow a strict diet?

No. This approach does not involve a meal plan, calorie counting or food rules. The focus is on changing the responses that drive emotional eating and rebuilding awareness of natural hunger, fullness and satisfaction signals. How you eat changes as a result of that work, not as a precondition for it.
