Recognising the signs of depression and low mood: when it’s more than just a bad day

“I just haven’t felt like myself lately…”

Sometimes, the signs are subtle. You’re getting through the day, but everything feels heavier. You cancel plans more often. You struggle to focus. Even small tasks feel like too much.

Other times, the signs are loud—crying without knowing why, feeling disconnected from the people you love, or waking up with a sense of dread that won’t lift.

This blog post is for anyone who’s been quietly wondering, “Is this just a rough patch, or something more?” We’ll explore the early signs of depression and persistent low mood, and how hypnotherapy can offer gentle, grounded support when things feel overwhelming.

When low mood becomes something deeper

We all have days—or even weeks—when we feel down. That’s part of being human.

But sometimes, low mood lingers. It starts to colour everything: your energy, your thoughts, your sense of hope. You might feel like you're going through the motions, smiling when expected but feeling numb underneath.

Here are some common signs that low mood may be turning into something more:

  • Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
  • Constant fatigue or trouble sleeping
  • Feeling worthless, guilty, or hopeless
  • Withdrawing from loved ones
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Struggling to concentrate or make decisions
  • Feeling tearful or emotionally flat
  • Thoughts that life feels meaningless or too hard

You don’t need to check every box for it to be real. You don’t need to wait until you’re “really bad” to reach out. Mental health exists on a spectrum—and early support can make a meaningful difference.

Depression doesn’t always look the way we expect

One of the most misunderstood things about depression is that it doesn’t always look “sad.”

Sometimes, it looks like irritability, numbness, or perfectionism. It can show up in the body as headaches, digestive issues, or chronic pain. Or in the mind as constant overthinking and guilt.

Often, clients tell me:

“I don’t think I’m depressed—I just feel stuck.”

“I still go to work and get things done… but I feel empty inside.”

The subconscious mind plays a big role in this. It may hold onto beliefs or emotions that were never fully processed—like old grief, criticism, or trauma. Over time, this can affect how we feel, think, and respond to life.

Hypnotherapy helps access those deeper layers safely, gently. We don’t have to relive painful memories—but we can work with the part of you that carries them, helping you feel lighter, more whole, and more connected to yourself again.

“I should be able to snap out of it”

This is something I hear so often, and it breaks my heart. Mental health struggles are not a failure of willpower. They’re not laziness, weakness, or selfishness. They’re often the mind and body’s way of saying: “Something isn’t right, and I need help.”

Depression and low mood can be triggered by:

  • Long-term stress or burnout
  • Loss or grief (even years ago)
  • Unprocessed trauma
  • Hormonal shifts
  • Isolation or loneliness
  • Feeling unfulfilled or disconnected from purpose

When these feelings build over time, it’s not about “snapping out of it”—it’s about listening in. Hypnotherapy provides a safe space for that listening to begin. Together, we can explore what your inner world is holding onto, and what it might be ready to let go of.

Reframing low mood as a signal—not a flaw

What if, instead of judging the sadness or heaviness, we got curious?

Depression often has a protective function. It might be shielding you from emotional pain, keeping you “numb” because feeling would be too much. It might be the result of chronic self-criticism or a life that no longer fits who you are. When we reframe low mood as a signal, we open up space for healing.

That signal might be saying:

  • “I’m overwhelmed.”
  • “I feel disconnected.”
  • “I need to slow down.”
  • “I need support.”

Hypnotherapy isn’t about pretending to be happy. It’s about gently connecting with those inner signals, and giving them space to be heard—without fear, without judgement.

There is a way forward

I know that when you’re feeling low, reaching out can feel hard. Even reading this might feel like a big step. But I want to gently remind you: you are not alone. These feelings are more common than you think—and they are not permanent.

Through hypnotherapy, many clients find:

  • A renewed sense of calm and clarity
  • Relief from inner tension or emotional heaviness
  • Greater self-compassion and understanding
  • The ability to reconnect with what brings joy and meaning

We work together at a pace that feels safe. No pressure, no pushing—just curiosity, care, and support.
